Muq

Muq is a Grasshopper toolkit for creating, modifying, analysing, and decomposing Muqarnas geometries. Muqarnas is a significant element of Islamic architecture, composed of small individual pieces that are assembled in layers to form intricate, quasi-organic structures. Its many stylistic variations reflect a rich relationship between mathematics, craft, and architectural form.

MUQ uses non-module-based algorithms to generate Muqarnas from three-dimensional points and their connected topology. This topological approach, informed by graph theory, allows designers to extract panel patches and fabrication sections without requiring a different algorithm for every Muqarnas type.

Muq provides four methods for creating a Muqarnas model:

• Muq From Mesh
• Muq From Topology
• Muq From JSON

Each workflow produces the same MUQ object, from which users can extract analytical, geometric, mathematical, structural, topological, and manufacturing data.

The topological model supports regular and irregular Muqarnas forms, enabling rapid edits and immediate feedback. Muq can extract fabrication patches and generate unrolled elements for production. Its adaptable kernel also supports the exploration of related topological geometries beyond conventional Muqarnas.
