Engraving Islamic-Pattern
IAAC and Helioripple workshop hosted by the Institute for Architecture Daneshpajoohan
Isfahan, a major repository of Iranian artistic heritage, hosted an academic workshop to design and fabricate a sculpture for one of its historic art schools. Curated by the University of Daneshpajoohan and the IAAC Institute, the workshop was led by Amin Bahrami of Studio Helioripple and Rodrigo Auguri of IAAC. Its objective was to synthesize a collection of patterns into a freestanding sculpture for installation on campus.
Plywood was selected for its capacity to register the generated patterns clearly and support CNC fabrication. As students developed their proposals, the workshop tested the available subtractive-fabrication equipment. RhinoCAM generated the initial G-code files and custom CNC toolpaths, refining the expression of the patterns. Each student’s working surface was derived from an optimized paneling system.
